About Finca La Montañita

At 1900 meters above sea level, in the highest parts of the city of trees, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, it is possible to appreciate among rocks and bushes a bonfire that protects a family that laughs, shares and takes a break from their long work day at the farm. Teresa, Don Mateo's daughter, does not understand exactly what she feels, although she knows very well that this is where she belongs and she definitely wants to continue the legacy of her family, because she is the mountain that saw her grow up. .

As a child, she was told that her grandparents worked the land along the coast and that eventually her father would look for a way to improve things in Guate; something that would not have been possible until her father emigrated to the United States and years later with a little money he would achieve the purchase of the farm. This small large piece of land would be called Finca La Montañita, which would become the economic pillar of the Gaspar family.

Having one of the purest Marsellesa coffee crops in Guate and at the same time Pache Rojo and Verde, in 2008 they would register their coffee as organic specialty coffee and increasingly recognize the importance of processes to get the best out of their beans. With the passage of time, she would realize that no matter how technical the solutions were to improve her cultivation, what really guided the direction of the Farm were the decisions, because a young woman who was barely entering her 20's would decide to take the responsibility of becoming the heart of Finca la Montañita, while her grandmother and her mother would be left alone with the desire to work the farm but without the physical capacity.

When Teresa made the decision to take responsibility for the family business, several people in the area were selling their farms, due to the lack of labor and the little interest generated by the coffee and even having gone through situations where the price was not favorable at all. which made the family think that it was not worth preserving the land and even so, having suffered diseases such as Roya in 2016. What could sound more discouraging? What would keep the Finca alive? Teresa's will.

Today, the little girl lives on in the dreams of a young adult who leads people who carefully cut ripe coffee beans by hand in a Montañita where the weather is freezing but hearts are warm. where communication is essential for a good process, where family members are friends and friends are family. About to start the next great phase of her life, Teresa is part of the El Sendero cooperative and constantly seeks to expand her little mountain, sell her coffee at a better price, fight against stereotypes of machismo in a totally adverse culture and continue to live off what that went from being a need to a passion.

"It is nice to see the work that one of us has done on the farm, one does not realize it until they tell it to him"
