About Finca La Peña

Located atop a hill in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, is the La Peña farm and its proud producers. The place is well known by the residents of the area and the community, and its visitors are not limited to a single species, as there are many small animals that wander among the trees feeling safe and brightening up the environment with their harmonious songs. Among the coffee plantations stands out a Chalum tree and characteristic Pacaya trees, whose fruits are usually a cause of enjoyment for the coffee growing family in quiet and pleasant meetings. This is not a result of destiny and much less a product of chance, on the contrary, it was the efforts of Heidy and her father to convert the farm into a place that respects the flora and fauna that have caused so much environmental richness within the small territory of the farm.

However, that is just one of many examples of the family's hard work to keep their farm alive and growing. The beginning of its history dates back to the 1960's, when the Marcos family entered the world of coffee; along the way there were many obstacles and moments of difficulty, however, the hard work over the years paid off, and this was reflected in the score of 84 that their valuable coffee beans recently obtained.  This is how this bean has formed part of Heidy's life since her birth and for her, more than a crop to be produced, coffee has acquired meanings of different shades.

In the first instance, coffee for her is linked to her childhood laughter and precious moments when she accompanied her father in the fields. Coffee also means opportunity and sacrifice, because thanks to coffee she emigrated to the department of Huehuetenango and prepared herself academically. Finally, coffee represents community, love, roots and history, a reason that attracted her back to the world of coffee plantations with a greater objective in mind. This is how now, after many unexpected turns, ups and downs of her first moments in this environment, Heidy has decided to impact, through the Association of Integral Development "La Esperanza Toneca", in the development of many coffee growers, as it happens that there is no one who knows better the advantages, deficiencies and difficulties that exist in the world of coffee than she who has grown up surrounded by it.
