About Finca La Vega

Coffee runs through the blood, not only in our body, but also in our family. This is the case of Elvia María Monzón, as she is a third generation coffee grower. Before her came her father, and before him, her grandfather. As a child, Elvia's father took her on frequent horseback rides around his coffee plantations. Over time, Elvia, being surrounded by so much coffee, fell in love of it, as much as those who came before her. Now, her grandfather is resting, so her father has taken over the reins of the plantations, giving Elvia a part at the age of 15 so that she can take care of them with the love she has. The legacy did not stop there, but Elvia has also granted certain parts of her land to her children, so that they too can live off the family business. Now, Elvia has been working in coffee farms for 37 years, and as she says: "My life is and will be coffee, that's where I will end and I will never stop being a producer until the end of my life."

Elvia's heart does not end there, her love is so great that it also extends to the environment. With just a couple of small actions, she has managed to reduce pollution in the land and in the rivers. She has been working in initiatives focusing on conserving the soil, reforesting her plots, reusing coffee honey as fertilizer, and using dirty water for other tasks. Elvia's process is detailed, patient and loving by giving great care to the process of drying her coffee in a greenhouse, putting it on nylon, and reforesting with different trees such as palo de madre de agua, casuarina and nadinos. Elvia has dedicated herself completely to her plots, always being orderly with her work, always respecting everyone and with great delicacy, managing to obtain a clean and environmentally friendly coffee, valuing a cup profile of 83.50.

Currently, Elvia's coffee is sold through the Cooperativa Integral Agrícola Rancho Viejo RL. Through this alliance, she has managed to give her coffee more visibility and has generated more sales. But the experience does not end there, having also obtained a great experience. Elvia has been the first woman to join this cooperative, breaking with many schemes present in this place, the main one being machismo. Through her hard work, she managed to prove that women are just as capable as men and that they deserve the same rights. This has not only been a challenge for the cooperative, but also for her family, having to show them that she is capable of developing in this environment dominated by men. Now, she is a leader and the representative, in this place, of her family and of the women who, thanks to her, have also decided to join this cooperative.

The extension of Elvia's work will not end there. Although she is proud of her work so far, she continues to train to improve and add value to her coffee. The next steps for Elvia will be to extend her line of work, to be able to sell her roasted and ground coffee. Her greatest hope does not stop there, but she also wants to meet the people who buy her coffee and achieve direct communication. So we invite you to contact Elvia and learn more about her work!
