About La Reserva Natural Bosques del Lago

Her first memory of coffee is close to the heart. "I remember as a child staying up late with my mother while she drank coffee, and we shared laughter and tears together." From these core childhood memories, She realized her appreciation for the coffee drink. Then upon meeting the coffee tree, a passion was awakened inside her, and she began the dream of becoming the owner of her own farm. In the beautiful country of Guatemala in 2019, she bought a farm. The Bosques del Lago Natural Reserve was born with the mindset of promoting ecotourism, showcasing sustainable production, and promoting employment for the community. She has utilized her knowledge of sustainable land management and her passion for the environment to grow award-winning coffee and create a natural sanctuary. Armadillos, rabbits, squirrels, and iguanas are native to the area and are one of the reasons she works so diligently to preserve the land. Land conservation and maintaining a high-quality bean requires her to be intentional with her farm processes and management.

Located 1,200 meters above sea level and rising to 1,700 meters, the Bosques del Lago Nature Reserve refrains from using chemical pesticides on its 10-hectare acreage. Each task performed and strategy implemented is carried out to preserve and regenerate the soil all with the intent of serving the environment. Maintaining these practices has its unique challenges. One of the most challenging aspects is there is no market for organic farming. In that, the producer does not receive any additional profits to offset the costs of organic practices. As a result, it is difficult to find people that share the environmentalist spirit and are willing to work harder for the same pay as they would make for less taxing labor. Not using chemicals means more attentiveness to the plants to prevent pests, combat moisture damage and maintain high-quality plants. Fertilizing becomes especially challenging in sustainable farming. The coffee trees deplete the soil of nutrients, so fertilizers like mineral salts are used to restore it. Compost and worm manure is also used based on fermentations, all to maintain the characteristics of the Reserve and restore the soil's health. She takes great pride in her care for mother nature, and she works hard to achieve a high-quality product.

She has won multiple awards just three short years after purchasing her farm. In 2020, the Reserve obtained third place for both washed coffee and coffee with a natural process. Most recently, in 2021, her coffee won third place for natural coffee and sixth for washing at the "Cafés Regionales" competition. In 2022, her coffee gained first place in the washed process category. In 2023, she plans to participate in the "Cup of Excellence" competition. This means she and her team will have to work harder than ever and recruit more people to work the farm. She is seeking investors and new partners to make her dreams come true and have the resources to promote the excellent coffee that the farm produces. Her love for the land and the coffee tree radiates throughout the Finca Reserva and its products. You taste the passion for the nature with every sip.
