About Finca Valle Verde

Luisana comes from a long family history of coffee growers for more than five generations. Her great-grandparents first began with a small plot, raising horses, cows and growing different crops. Luisana grew up with her grandfather and recalls one of her first memories as walking through the coffee plantations with him. Through his passion, Luisana grew her own love and appreciation for coffee and also learned that with dedication and effort she could achieve her goals.

With the courage her grandfather instilled in her, Luisana bought 20 hectares of land in eastern Guatemala at just 19 years old. From a young age, Luisana, with the support of her husband Johnny, dedicated much of her time and resources to her dream and life project, her farm Finca Valle Verde and Annexes. They dedicated themselves to preparing the farm and to creating a home for new employees that would help them work the land. In its beginning, the vast majority of the farmers were women from their community.

Finca Valle Verde and Annexes now has 56 hectares in total and is located in the municipality of Moyuta Jutiapa, at 1,450 meters above sea level. It has different traditional arabica varieties, including Caturra, Catuaí, and Bourbón. Today, Luisana and her husband have managed to become a model farm within their community for their agronomic programs and for their continuous innovation in controlled fermentation and in drying processes to produce specialty coffees. Currently, the farm produces washed, natural, and honey coffees dried in patios and in African beds.

The farm also features an abundance of biodiversity. For example, it has the view of beautiful valleys and hills full of vegetation. You can also spot the Pacific Ocean at a distance and see the Moyuta Volcano.

To Luisana, the vision for the future of her farm is to create better quality coffee and to be better known worldwide. She strives to manage direct contracts with international roasters in order to obtain higher prices and improve the profitability of the farm. Just as her grandfather inspired her, Luisana also dreams of sharing her love and passion for this industry with the creation of a coffee school, which would have a cupping lab and a roasting machine, to create a coffee culture and promote education in her community.
