Announcing the 2019 Virtual Origin Trip to Nicaragua

We are excited to announce that the GFE team is heading to Nicaragua in order to bring the origin experience to you!

Sadly, our annual GFE Origin Trip is not going to happen this year. However, we will keep with tradition by visiting our farmers, a coffee cooperative, and our roasting partner, Vega’s, facilities in Esteli. Starting on Monday, we will begin posting videos each day that capture what Origin Trip travelers would have seen as we travel throughout the week.

Follow along starting Monday, February 4th by tracking this blog, our Facebook and Instagram, or #GFEVirtualOriginTrip for videos that come directly from Nicaragua!

At Grounds for Empowerment, we are dedicated to maintaining our support of women coffee farmers during these unsettling times in Nicaragua. We hope that this Virtual Origin Trip will provide you all with insights into life in coffee country.

Trip Itinerary:

  • Day 1: The traveling team will arrive in Nicaragua and will visit a dear friend and entrepreneur in Managua.

  • Day 2: Our first official stop will be Café Alborada, the farm of GFE farmer Ivania Calderón.

  • Day 3: To get a more complete picture of how coffee is graded and sold, the team will spend some time with the Prodecoop coffee cooperative.

  • Day 4: On to another coffee farm! This time, the team will spend the day with Alexa Marin at her farm, Finca San Antonio.

  • Day 5: We'll get a chance to see the roasting process come to life at Vega Coffee's Esteli roasting facility.

  • Day 6: Back to Managua and adios to Nica!
