About Finca El Zapote
Nebaj, which derives from the Ixil language and which means "place where water is born", is located 250 km from Guatemala City. The name Nebaj perfectly describes the place where the farm is located, between mountains and wild vegetation. Most of the farm is dedicated to the conservation of forests, within which there are trees planted for more than 100 years.
Founded four generations ago by a Spanish immigrant whose passion for the countryside led him to introduce coffee cultivation, Finca El Zapote today remains a family farm, managed by his great-granddaughter, Ana Isabel, and her brother and sisters. During the 90 years that the farm has been, it has resisted wars, economic crises and environmental disasters, but like the fertile land on which they live, the family and its community have managed to get ahead.
Ana Isabel along with her siblings, contrary to the majority of coffee growers in the area, continues to work and invest in coffee: improving the sowing, beneficiation and traceability processes, but at the same time maintaining the practices that ensure good quality of the grain and that have passed from generation to generation. They are trying to recover ancestral varieties such as Maragogipe and introducing new varieties such as Geisha.
A cup of Finca El Zapote coffee has notes of chocolate, fruit and sweet caramel that linger on the palate and provide a welcoming aroma. With this highly qualified coffee is the passion and enthusiasm of the harvest, sown with techniques passed down from generation to generation and improved year after year. The coffee plantations of Finca El Zapote are surrounded by forest, streams and centenary water sources; without a doubt, the richness and history of this landscape is reflected in the quality of the cup.
