About Cooperativa Agua Blanca R. L.

The Agua Blanca R. L. Cooperative was founded by a group of farmers in 1975 and has been directed by 22 women since 1988. Women are the ones who perform the executive work for the organization of small coffee producers in the community.

In the mountainous areas of Santa Cruz Naranjo coffee has been cultivated since 1940. This mountainous area has an extension of 4650 hectares with artificial forests and a production of 76,000 quintals of coffee beans. Because of the environment, the traditional producers offer a specialty coffee to the world to taste the exquisiteness of the drink in their cup.

Within the political organization of the republic of Guatemala, El Teocinte is a village belonging to the municipal of Santa Cruz Naranjo, in the province of Santa Rosa. El Teocinte is on a piece of terrain where marimbas are made. It is located in the southeast at 68 kilometers from Guatemala City and at a height of 1,180 meters above sea level. The cooperative was created in the community in order to satisfy common needs, to raise the quality of life of the small coffee producers and increase their production and income.

On July 25, 1975, the twenty-two women and three men who ambitiously started the   cooperatives had a production of 1000 quintals of coffee beans in an area of 10.5 hectares. Today the cooperative is made up of 102 women and 80 men, with a production of 2600 quintals of hard and strictly hard coffee beans in 102 hectares. The cooperative currently receives the support of the National Coffee Association ANACAFE and a sustainable assistance network SCAN- Guatemala for sustainable coffee cultivation based on the combination of technology and environmental preservation.

Between 1987 and 1988, a group of twenty-two women became incorporated into the Agua Blanca R. L. The administrative team has achieved productive activity with the comprehensive development of complementary services for coffee producers. The participation of women is already being considered as vital in the community as people recognize their leadership and capacities towards great efficiency.
